1. What is beef jerky?
It is jerky made with beef. The word "jerky" itself comes from the Quechua
term Charqui, which means "dried meat". Jerky is an early application of
food preservation because jerky can be stored without refrigeration.
2. Why is most beef jerky so expensive?
The main reason is that all jerky is costly to make. Beef is about 60% water, so when it is dried most of the weight is evaporated. It takes about 2.5 LBs of quality beef to make 1 LB of jerky. Secondly, many jerky companies use expensive chemicals and preservatives when making their jerky, and they have alot of waste just based on how they make it. We use minimal preservatives, especially in our Original and Fiery Hot flavors, and have a unique process is much more efficient and reduces waste considerably. This saves you money. Finally, ordering directly from us "cuts out the middleman" and allows us to pass the savings directly to you.
3. How is Big John's Beef jerky different from other brands?
Our jerky is made using a totally different and unique process (patent
pending) then all other jerky on the market today. For one, it is smoked
with real hickory woodchips for over 14 hours, unlike other brands which use
artificial smoke flavoring and/or dry it for just a few hours or less.
4. Why is it cut into strips?
The cut it is part of our unique process. We have found that the strips are
much easier to eat than most brands and allow you to see the quality of the
beef before you taste it.
5. What is the shelf life?
We guarantee our unopened bags will remain fresh for at least 6 months. Once
a bag is opened it should be eaten or frozen within 7 days for maximum
freshness.
6. What's the best way to store it?
Store your jerky in a cool dry place avoiding direct sunlight. Once a bag is
opened, remove as much air as possible and close the bag. It can also be
stored in the freezer. Make sure you allow it to get to room temperature
before eating because IMHO jerky Popsicles aren't very tasty! Avoid the
refrigerator because changes in temperatures can cause condensation in the
bag and lead to a shortened shelf life.
7. How do I place an order
From our order page, simply select the item you would like to purchase,
enter the quantity you want to order and click Choose Flavor. A pop up box
will open and allow you to choose your flavors. Click "checkout" to proceed.
You will then enter your payment and billing information, verify all the
information is correct, and submit your order for processing. You can also

Absolutely. Our customized shopping cart will make it easy to choose any
flavor or combination of flavors for any sampler pack.
9. Do you keep personal information on file?
We keep your personal information on file to fulfill you order and for
business records. This includes your name, billing and shipping addresses,
phone number and email address. All credit card and payment information is

Yes. We use industry standard 128-bit encryption when submitting any
personal data and storing payment information (optional). In addition, our
entire shopping cart has been built from scratch using the latest security

Our jerky is sold primarily though this website, but can also be found in
many retail locations throughout the US. Contact us to see if it is

12. How long does shipping take?
We generally ship all orders within 1 business day, and transit time is 2-3
days for US customers and 6-10 business days for Canadian and Military
customers. Since we make our jerky fresh there are times when it may take an
additional day to get your order shipped.
13. Can I track my order?
You can track most orders. Tracking is not available for US and Military
orders under 1 LB and Canadian orders under 4 LBs.
14. Can I order wholesale?
Yes. There are minimum purchase requirements. See our Wholesale info page
for details on how to open a wholesale account. You can also checkout our
Sampler packs and Combo Packs as some are priced at wholesale..
15. Are there any discounts available?
Absolutely. Our Featured Special and Sampler Packs are great ways to save

Our beef jerky makes a great gift all year around. While our Jerky of the

18. Can I get jerky shipped automatically each month?
Yes. Our Jerky of the Month Club is 1 LB of jerky per month. You can also
have any of your previously placed orders shipped automatically each month
(or as often as you like).
19. Can I buy stock in SME Foods?
No. Not yet anyway.
20. What happens if I don't like it?
We doubt that will happen. If it does happen, however, we will gladly
replace it or refund your money. We stand by our jerky 100%.
21. Where do you buy your beef?
We purchase our beef from a local distributor, who gets it from major meat
processors in and around Pennsylvania.
22. Where is it made and packaged?
Right here in the USA! All of our jerky is hand made and packaged by hand in
our USDA-inspected facility in York. PA.
23. What payment methods do you accept?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and PayPal for online
orders. We also accept checks and offer payment terms for our wholesalers
and distributors with credit approval.
